Why Are Ants Attracted To Your Home?

Posted on

If you are always getting ants, you aren't alone. Spring is the time of the year when these pests emerge from the ground where they have been hibernating below the surface, just waiting to come out when the weather warms up and are going to begin foraging for food. Your home may be the closest thing to them, so they are going to head in that same direction each time, especially if they are finding what they need in your home. There may be something attracting them to your home though, which brings them back year after year, and a few changes may prevent them from ever coming back. Read on for a few things that may be attracting these pests to your yard, and some changes you can use to prevent ants in your home.

Mulch

If you have mulch around your home or close to your foundation, the ants may be attracted to it. They can easily maneuver through the mulch, and they prefer the dirt and moisture inside the mulch. If you have mulch, you should remove the mulch and opt for rocks instead, which can move moisture away from your home, rather than hold it in like mulch can. Mulch in your yard that is away from your home's foundation can be in your yard, but any mulch touching your foundation, or close to your home should be removed.

Water Leak

If you have a water leak in or around your home, ants may be attracted to this as well. They need water in order to survive, so if they find water easily at your home, they will come back year after year. You need to repair water leaks, even minor ones. If you have a leaky water spigot, a leak beneath your sink, or a leak anywhere, you need to have it repaired. Ants and other pests are going to be looking for water, so you could end up with multiple pest issues if you aren't careful.

Food

If you have easily found food for ants, they are going to come to your home to find what they need. They may find it easily on your floors, counters, and cooking spaces, or they may find it in other areas such as your pet's food that you leave out, or other food you leave outside and is easily found. Clean up after yourself at home by wiping down all hard surfaces after cooking or doing any meal prep, or eating, and put away your pet's food as well.

If you have a problem with ants year after year, it could be something at your home that is attracting them there. Make some changes in order to prevent them from returning, and hire an ant pest control professional to help you as well.
